Materials

  • Yarn
    • Knitting worsted weight. If using finer yarns, use 2 or 3 strands.
    • Use small quantities of each for bear head, paws and feet; sweater, trousers and scarf.
    • The brighter the colors, the livelier the bear will look.
    • Using scraps, and left over or half skeins of materials are ideal for this project.
    • Make them as colorful or as plain as you like - each bear you make will be one of a kind.
  • Hook
    • 4.5mm (G/6) (or to get a tight tension)
  • Stuffing
    • Use only new, clean polyester fiberfill for stuffing the bears.
  • Gauge
    • The crocheting must be tight enough that the stuffing will not come through.
    • Make a little swatch and check for closeness of stitches. Change crochet hooks if necessary.

Finished Measurements

Height of finished bear should be no larger than 25.5cm [10 inches] maximum.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTES

  • DO NOT USE BUTTONS, PINS OR OTHER LOOSE MATERIAL TO MAKE THE FACE.
  • DO NOT USE FOAM RUBBER FOR STUFFING, AS THE CHILD MAY CHEW IT.
  • Also supply (if possible): a little bag about 12 inches long and 10 inches wide, enough to hold one teddy. Please use a single cord at the top; this should be no longer than the mouth of the open bag with the ends of the cord knotted together. Please do not add any other knots. Sewing instructions for the bag can be found here.

Instructions

Work begins at the bottom of the feet on the front (or back) and proceeds upward, over the head and down the back (or front) to the bottom of the feet.

1st leg

  • With bear color, chain 10.
  • Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (9sc), chain 1, turn.
  • Row 2: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.
  • Repeat row until there are 6 rows for foot.
  • Before finishing the 6th row, attach trouser color and work 18 rows for leg. Fasten off.

2nd leg

  • Make as 1st leg, but do not fasten off; ch 1, turn.
  • Work across both legs (18 sc), ch 1, turn.
  • Work a total of 8 rows.
  • Before finishing off, attach sweater color, ch 1, turn.
  • Work 10 rows for shirt.
  • Before finishing off, attach bear color, ch 1, turn.
  • Work 26 rows for head.
  • Before finishing off, attach sweater color, ch 1, turn.
  • Work 10 rows for shirt. Continue working in reverse, stopping when finished with the 2nd leg.
  • Join trouser color at top of leg and work as for 1st leg.
  • Sew up sides of head and turn inside out.
  • Make 7 sc on each side of the head for sleeve in shirt color.

1st sleeve

  • Work 12 rows for sleeve. At end of 12th row, finish last sc with bear color.
  • Work 6 rows for paw and fasten off.

2nd sleeve

  • Make sleeve on other side the same as the 1st sleeve.
  • Sew diagonal at the top of each side of the head to form ears - do not stuff.
  • Embroider a "happy" face on side of the head making sure that teddy's "smile" is above the tied scarf. Use embroidery thread or yarn for the face. (See samples here.)

Scarf

  • With scarf color, ch 71.
  • Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn.
  • Make 3 more rows and fasten off. Sew in yarn ends.

Finishing

  • Turn the bear inside out and sew it up, leaving a small opening at the crotch for stuffing.
  • Use clean padding such as cotton batting to stuff teddy.
  • Please use a generous amount of stuffing.
  • Draw a thread around the neck.
  • Tie scarf around teddy's neck and tack it to the back of the neck.

We hope you enjoyed making teddy; a little child is waiting for yours.
