Materials

  • Yarn
    • Double knitting or knitting worsted weight. If using finer yarns, use 2 or 3 strands.
    • Use small quantities of each for bear head, paws and feet; sweater, trousers and scarf.
    • The brighter the colors, the livelier the bear will look.
    • Using scraps, and left over or half skeins of materials are ideal for this project.
    • Make them as colorful or as plain as you like - each bear you make will be one of a kind.
  • Needles
    • 8 or 9 inches long and the size you need to make the bear to the finished height.
  • Stuffing
    • Use only new, clean polyester fiberfill for stuffing the bears.
  • Gauge
    • The knitting must be tight enough that the stuffing will not come through. Make a little swatch and check for closeness of stitches. Change needles if necessary.

Finished Measurements

Height of finished bear should be no larger than 25.5cm [10 inches] maximum.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTES

  • DO NOT USE BUTTONS, PINS OR OTHER LOOSE MATERIAL TO MAKE THE FACE.
  • DO NOT USE FOAM RUBBER FOR STUFFING AS THE CHILD MAY CHEW IT.
  • Also required (please supply if possible): a little bag about 12 inches long and 10 inches wide, enough to hold one teddy. Please use a single cord at the top; this should be no longer than the mouth of the open bag with the ends of the cord knotted together. Please do not add any other knots. Sewing instructions for the bag can be found here.

Instructions

Note: the entire bear is made in garter stitch unless specified otherwise.

Work begins at the bottom of the feet on the front (or back) and proceeds upward, over the head and down the back (or front) to the bottom of the feet.

1st leg

  • With bear color, cast on 10 stitches and work for 10 rows (5 ribs).
  • Attach trouser color and knit 30 rows (15 ribs). Put these stitches on a holder.

2nd leg

  • Make as 1st leg; then knit across all 20 stitches for 16 rows for the pants.
  • Attach sweater color and work for 16 rows.
  • Attach bear color and work in stocking stitch for approx. 16-18 rows (head).
  • Continue down the back of the bear in reverse order, beginning with the sweater.
  • With the right side of the stocking stitch out, fold the bear at the top of the head to form a front and back.
  • Sew diagonal at the top of each side of the head to form ears - do not stuff.
  • Embroider a "happy" face on side of the head making sure that teddy's "smile" is above the tied scarf. Use embroidery thread or yarn for the face. (See samples here.)

1st sleeve

  • With sweater color and right side of bear facing you, pick up and knit 8 stitches on front of the sweater from about midpoint to the shoulder, then pick up 8 stitches on the back (16 stitches).
  • Work 20 rows in sweater color, then 10 rows in bear color.
  • Work 2nd sleeve as first, beginning at back.

Scarf

  • With scarf color, cast on 75 stitches and knit 4 rows. Bind off.

Finishing

  • Turn the bear inside out and sew it up, leaving a small opening at the crotch for stuffing.
  • Use clean padding such as cotton batting to stuff teddy.
  • Please use a generous amount of stuffing.
  • Draw a thread around the neck.
  • Tie scarf around teddy's neck and tack it to the back of the neck.

We hope you enjoyed making teddy; a little child is waiting for yours.
